Making an Impression with Pageant Gowns
Pageants can be stressful. You're judged on the smallest things, and there's a lot of preparation involved to look perfect. However, they can also be highly entertaining. It's fun to dress up every once in a while. Pageant gowns are known for being bold and interesting, and they look best when you have the confidence to truly show them off.
The first place to start when thinking about a pageant gown is with the theme of the pageant. Is it simply an age group, or is there a specific theme? Pageant themes vary widely, from holiday pageants to pageants where the dresses are supposed to reflect a certain time period. Match your dress to the theme so you fit in, but don't look like you're trying too hard. The overall effect should be noticeable but not like anything resembling a cheap costume.
Get to know the judges too. Older judges often have a more conservative outlook and will be more impressed with classic, modest gowns. With younger judges, you can take more risks. This isn't always the case though, so if you can get a chance to talk to them before the pageant, take it. You can also look for girls who have been in similar pageants and talk about what they were judged on.
When you're being judged mostly on looks, it's important to make your personality shine through as well. Pageants usually have an interview portion, but a good interview alone won't be very memorable, much like a good gown with nothing else backing it up. Your dress should enhance the impression you make during your interview and help the judges remember your personality when you appear on stage afterwards.
Now you can start thinking about color and shape. The color of your gown is extremely important, enough that it can make or break you. Don't go with a color simply because it's your favorite; look for something that goes perfectly with your hair color, eye color, and skin tone. You can often get evaluated to find your ideal colors at makeup counters in various department stores. The silhouette of your pageant dress should make your body look as balanced as possible.
Finally, there are the shoes and accessories. These should go with your gown and attract attention without overpowering the rest of your outfit. Your footwear is a great place to experiment and choose bold options, but make sure it's something you can comfortably and easily walk across the stage in. You want your walk to seem effortless. Similarly, your accessories should enhance your dress without seeming like the main attraction.
Confidence is key in pulling everything together. Pageant winners not only have beautiful gowns, they also have fantastic personalities and bright smiles. Let your gown inspire you to win!
